Wick, Umarov Victorious At The Clash MMA

TCMMA

Great night for the Combat Fitness/SBG Idaho crew last Friday night at The Clash MMA 16 in Logan, Utah.

CF/SBG Idaho undefeated amateur, Elmar Umarov, ran his record to 5-0 and earned his first championship belt, with a second round submission victory over defending lightweight champion, McKinley Smith.

Umarov made liberal use of low kicks and feints in round one, to keep Smith off balance and guessing.. A late takedown by Smith to finish the first frame kept the score close. Round two saw both fighters open up their offense more, with Umarov mixing in more punching combinations with his kicks and feints. Another takedown my Smith against the cage was quickly reversed by Umarov who immediately took the back and applied the fight ending rear naked choke!

In the evening’s first professional bout, CF/SBG Idaho’s up and coming featherweight prospect, Josh Wick, ran his winning streak to five, picking up a second round submission victory over Jeremiah Guzman.

Like Umarov, Wick leaned on a kick heavy offense in round one. Low kicks, teeps to the mid-section, and the occasional head kick, kept the grappling-minded Guzman at bay. Though Guzman was able to secure a takedown late in the round, Wick used his aggressive guard to force Guzman to disengage and return to the feet. Round two saw Wick begin to mix in more punches with his offense, finding a home for several hard right hands. A Wick head kick finally found its home several minutes in, wobbling Guzman and forcing him to retreat to the cage. Wick wasted no time closing the distance, trapping the shorter Guzman against the cage, and finishing with a powerful standing guillotine choke! All of Wick’s professional victories have come by way of submission.
